Fitness on the high seas

Hello everyone, Laurie “Smith Machine” is back from a Mediterranean cruise and a sojourn in Rome.  It was an amazing trip – both on the ship and in the city.  When people think of cruising and a vacation in Italy, staying fit and eating healthy don’t usually top the list of things to do.  There is so much to do (and eat and drink) that bespeaks indulgence and pleasure!  I was very surprised to discover, upon returning to Vancouver, that my weight and bodyfat percentage had both dropped!  Especially since I did not deprive myself of anything I wanted to eat.  The dining service onboard is seamless and designed to impress.  Whatever you want whenever you want it.  And as for authentic Italian cuisine – well, you haven’t had pizza until you’ve had one in Rome, sitting in a piazza at a friendly bustling osteria, with a tall bottle of acqua minerale and a lush green salad to which you add your own olive oil.

Aboard the Mariner of the Seas (Royal Caribbean), I had the opportunity to scale a climbing wall, do spinning and yoga classes, and jog around the track on the sport deck.  I did something active every day for at least half an hour before getting off the ship, and then usually one of the classes late afternoon before dressing up for dinner.  I found a convenient place to hang my TRX and made my body my machine, sometimes to the puzzlement of fellow passengers.

I think that all the walking I did – and in Rome the streets are cobblestone, many of them very narrow without sidewalks (be alert for oncoming scooters!) – gave my legs a great workout, and contributed to maintaining some cardiovascular conditioning.  I therefore recommend that anyone wanting to shed some bodyfat, enjoy fabulous scenery, great food and the most historically amazing cities in the world – book themselves a vacation to the Mediterranean – pronto!

Other Than The Gym, I ♥ … Pt. 10

Don’t be fooled by this trainer. He may look like the most quiet trainer in the club, but this trainer actually loves throwing the best casual but really fun themed parties. Besides being a party trooper, Rob McKinlay is one heck of an athlete! Give him a ball and he can pass it, throw it, hit it, catch it, dribble it, shoot it and kick it. He finds the ball and explodes through it. Having recovered so quickly from a serious knee injury proves that he is very passionate about his sports and training.
